Question 1

What is the definition of Japanese whisky?

Accepted Answer

Under the voluntary labeling standard set by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association in February 2021 (fully applied from April 2024), Japanese whisky must be made only from malted grain, other grains and water drawn in Japan, and must always include malted grain; it must be saccharified, fermented and distilled at a distillery in Japan; aged in wooden casks of 700 liters or less for at least 3 years in Japan; and bottled in Japan at 40% ABV or higher. The standard applies to association members. See the types guide.

Question 2

What are the types of Japanese whisky?

Accepted Answer

Japanese whisky comes in several types: Single Malt (100% malted barley, single distillery), Single Grain (continuous still distillation), Blended (malt and grain whiskies combined), Blended Malt (malts from multiple distilleries), and Single Cask (bottled from one individual cask). See the types guide.

Question 3

What is the history of Japanese whisky?

Accepted Answer

Japanese whisky began in 1923 when Shinjiro Torii founded Japan's first malt whisky distillery at Yamazaki, Osaka. Masataka Taketsuru, who studied distilling in Scotland, served as the first distillery manager before founding Nikka Whisky in Yoichi, Hokkaido. Since the 2000s, Japanese whisky has won numerous international awards.

Question 4

What are the best ways to drink Japanese whisky?

Accepted Answer

Popular ways include neat (at room temperature), twice-up (equal parts whisky and water), on the rocks, mizuwari (with cold water), and highball (with soda water). Single malts are best appreciated neat or twice-up. Blended whiskies are excellent as highballs, which is the most popular style in Japan. See the drinking guide.

Question 5

What food pairs well with Japanese whisky?

Accepted Answer

Highballs pair brilliantly with yakitori, karaage (fried chicken), and tempura. Neat single malts complement cheese, nuts, chocolate, and smoked dishes. Mizunara-aged whiskies have a surprising affinity with Japanese cuisine like sashimi, sushi, and dashi-based dishes. See the pairing guide.

Question 6

Can I visit Japanese whisky distilleries?

Accepted Answer

Distilleries whose official websites list tours include Yamazaki (Osaka), Hakushu (Yamanashi), Yoichi (Hokkaido), Miyagikyo (Miyagi), Fuji Gotemba (Shizuoka) and Chichibu (Saitama). Most require advance reservations; check each distillery's official website for reservations, fees and hours. See the distillery visit guide.

Question 7

What is Mizunara oak?

Accepted Answer

Mizunara (Quercus crispula) is a Japanese oak species unique to Japan. Whisky aged in Mizunara casks develops distinctive oriental notes of sandalwood, incense, and coconut. It is rare and expensive, used notably by Yamazaki and other premium distilleries.

Question 8

What does NAS mean for whisky?

Accepted Answer

NAS stands for No Age Statement, meaning the whisky doesn't carry a minimum age declaration on the label. This emerged partly due to aged stock shortages but allows blenders to craft complex profiles without age constraints. NAS whiskies can be excellent quality.
